Baraa Rehamnia, a postdoc in Eric Capo's lab, studies microbial survival in low-energy aquatic sediments using metagenomics, focusing on pathways of resilient microorganisms in extreme environments.
Baraa Rehamnia is a postdoctoral researcher in Eric Capo's lab, specializing in microbial survival in aquatic sediments through metagenomics. Her current research focuses on uncovering the survival pathways of resilient microorganisms, particularly those thriving in low-energy environments in deep aquatic sediments.
Baraa obtained her bachelor's degree in biology of fungi and went on to complete her master's degree in biotechnology of fungi, fermentation, and production of fungal substances at Constantine 1- Frères Mentouri University in Algeria. She pursued her PhD in microbial biotechnology and bioprocess at the same university from 2016 to 2022, focusing on the microbiology of subterranean ecosystems and their biotechnological potential as probiotics.
Baraa also served as a guest PhD researcher at Umeå University in Sweden from 2020 to 2022, actively contributing to scientific projects ranging from Scandinavian native dark bees to tardigrades, lichens, fungi, and bacteria. Apart from her research, Baraa Rehamnia participated in popular science public events, including the Nobel Prize Museum, The Swedish Space Society, and Curiosum.
