Atin is an SSMF postdoc in Andrea Puhar's group. He is a molecular biologist trying to understand what makes an intracellular bacterium such a successful pathogen.
Atin Sharma obtained a PhD in molecular biology from IITR, India, studying the basis of antimicrobial resistance and its regulation in bacteria. He was selected as a postdoc in the inaugural call for Excellence by Choice Postdoctoral programme at Umeå university in 2018. Ever since, he has been working with Shigella flexneri, an intracellular pathogen. He is developing and employing high-throughput molecular and cell-based methods to manipulate and screen Shigella libraries and find determinants that allow this bacterium to be a successful pathogen. His research interests focus on recombinant DNA methods, especially CRISPR-Cas9 research and its application to study bacterial physiology.
Apart from being a researcher, he has a keen interest in illustrations and science communication. He occasionally writes for an Indian science magazine, draws nerdy comics, and leads the social media team at Umeå Postdoc Society.
