Women’s public sphere in the Swedish daily newspapers 1920-1950
Research project
The aim of this project is to study the emerging women’s pages in daily newspapers during the years between 1920 -1950 in order to explore how they were used as a public sphere for a discussion about the new roles of women in the arising Swedish welfare state, e g folkhemmet.
The concept of a public sphere is traditionally associated with male publishers and speakers who have been able to announce their opinions on matters of society in editorials and by debating in parlament. In the so called pages for home and hearth in the daily papers Stockholms Dagblad, Dagens Nyheter, Svenska Dagbladet, Stockholms-Tidningen och Nya Dagligt Allehanda female readers were invited by female journalists, in the early twentieth century, to discuss the changes of society. With the threat of war in Europe in mind, the female journalists used these women pages to include the discussion of a new citizen role for women. The women pages also foreboded a specialised journalism on social and consumer issues.
