To develop a trustworthy AI model for situation awareness by using mixed reality in Police interventions
Research project
We are developing responsible AI systems that in combination with Mixed Reality technology, will facilitate and develop the work of police officers in critical situations. The project is unique as it aims to improve safety and efficiency while taking maximum account of ethical aspects.
Police officers in the field are closest to the citizens. Their task may be to help a disoriented elderly person, manage the traffic, or solve complex, dangerous situations such as gang fights or shootings. In this project, we will develop responsible AI solutions in a mixed reality environment to enhance situational awareness in the field. The goal is to improve the ability to maintain a clear view of relevant and up-to-date information while not violating privacy and human rights.

The Department of Computing Science at Umeå University conducts leading research in tools and methods for designing, monitoring and developing trustworthy and responsible AI systems and applications. The most limiting factors in developing AI solutions for police and public safety are transparency and trustworthiness. Together with the Police Education Unit at Umeå University, as well as Mossos d'Esquadra, the police authority in Barcelona, we are conducting AI tests in combination with Mixed Reality, mainly HoloLens, in order to collect data, practice, and exercise, as well as assess the implementation of reliable AI requirements in different police response scenarios.
Test environment: Vehicle stops
Police officers in patrol cars face situations that can vary from low danger, such as traffic crime prevention tasks, to high threat, such as tracking a possible suspect who is traveling at high speed. We are interested in improving situational awareness and the impact of technologies that can support police officers in managing different tasks. From a research perspective, we chose this scenario because of its many implications. How do police officers on duty relate to AI and the new technology? What are the benefits and negative consequences? This project also aims to address the ethical and societal aspects of the new technology. We want to study several possible societal and legal challenges:
Societal challenges with AI: Using AI to detect potentially life-threatening situations or vehicles related to crime. Ensuring that fundamental rights such as privacy and non-discrimination are preserved while guaranteeing public safety.
Legislation and AI: Data protection issues, possible violations of fundamental rights related to the use of cameras, legal obstacles to the regulation of drones, and the use of drones in public places.

This project is part of HumanE AI, an EU-funded research programme, where Umeå University leads and coordinates Work package 5, AI Ethics and Responsible AI. The goal is to shape the rapid AI development in a direction that is beneficial to people and society, and that follows social, cultural, legal and political norms.
