The impact of place for aesthetics teachers in rural Arctic Sweden
PhD project
The aim of this thesis is to identify and analyze what affect place has on work as, and recruitment of, teachers within compulsory school’s aesthetic subjects in rural Arctic Sweden.
It is a democratic right for all children to have access to good education, which can be provided through teacher education and certification. The northern part of Sweden consists largely of rural areas, where there are difficulties in recruiting certified teachers, especially in the practical-aesthetic subjects. This thesis examines the effect the place has for teachers in aesthetic subjects in northern Sweden's rural areas. This includes how the work and the opportunities for work for these teachers are shaped by the location, as well as how the local influences the content of the teaching.
In my dissertation I examine which factors influence arts, crafts and music teachers' choice of working in northern Sweden's rural areas, and what impact they have on their teaching. The study also examines which approaches rural principals, and local politicians working for education administration in these areas, have for fostering a sustainable development of certified teachers in the aesthetic subjects, as well as how they interpret and implement regulations from state to municipal level.
