Teacher Education and Digital Citizenship in Postdigital Society

The purpose is to contribute with new knowledge on how teacher education addresses digital citizenship and the democratic assignment of school in a society pervaded by digital technologies.
Fostering citizens is part of teachers’ work for which they need skills and knowledge. The digitalization of society places new demands on teacher education institutes and teacher educators as the citizenship and the democratic landscape are changing. Youth’s citizenship is becoming increasingly more digital. Meanwhile, digital technologies spawn or augment challenges to democracy, such as disinformation campaigns, digital surveillance, and ‘echo chambers’.
Research has previously shown how teacher educators’ work is important to promote the democratic assignment of school. Also, research has shown that teacher educators need support to develop digital competence. The purpose of this PhD project is to contribute with knowledge on teacher educators’ work with preparing student teachers’ for the democratic assignment of school in a society pervaded by digital technologies, focusing digital citizenship in particular.
