Risk of adverse cardiac events in in children, adolescents, and young adults with psychiatric drug treatment: medical, pharmacological, age, gender, and social impacts

PhD project The aim of this project is to assess the association between use of psychotropic medication for ADHD, beyond mono-therapy, and the risk of different cardiac events, and a possible impact by other medical as well as social inequalities

The number of young patients with medication for psychiatric diagnoses (psychotropic treatment), especially for ADHD, has increased in Sweden. At the same time, the incidence of cardiac events has increased in this group. Psychotropic drugs can cause various cardiac events, including sudden death. The project investigates adverse cardiac events in children, adolescents, and young adults with exposure (different types of ADHD or psychotropic medication) and the principal mechanisms with regard to mono- or polypharmacy with adjustments for confounders and social or medical vulnerability.
