Prevention of age-related disorders in women

Risk profiling during perimenopause and later risk of breast cancer

Research project The goal of the project is to identify risk factors and biomarkers, during perimenopause, connected to postmenopausal breast cancer risk. The perimenopausal period is of significance as large metabolic and hormonal changes occur during this time, affecting breast tissue differentiation. Identifying perimenopausal markers useful for predicting who has the highest breast cancer risk could therefore be of importance.

Perimenopause represents the time before and after a woman’s last menstrual period, often occurring around 50 years of age. After menopause the risk of many chronic diseases, including breast cancer, increase substantially. This project therefore focuses on identification of biomarkers (specifically during perimenopause) that can be associated with an increased breast cancer risk 5-15 years after menopause.

Project description

We will use samples donated by women when they were 50 years old who have been followed until at least 65 years of age. Hopefully the project can improve the evidence of providing high risk women better access to personalized screening and prevention.

For those who have previously participated in the NSHDS and have provided samples and/or data for research, more information on how personal data is processed in the research project can be found here: Information for study participants
