New methods for measuring cerebrospinal fluid dynamics as well as parameters of the gait cycle
Research project
Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus is a neurological disease with gait and balance insufficience, incontinence and dementia. Surgery improves 70-80%, but selection for surgery is difficult and the methods for estimating improvement are blunt and subjective.
Several predictive tests are used for selecting patients for shunt surgery. The infusion test, where the dynamics of the cerebrospinal fluid is measured, is one such test. In this project new and improved mathematical infusion metods are further developed and validated to reach clinical implementation. Another important area is the development of more objective and precise methods for measuring degree of improvement following treatment. For this, new systems for measuring gait characteristics in daily clinic are being developed.
