Making place for space: A history of "Space Town" Kiruna 1948-2008
Research project
Kiruna is perhaps most known for its iron ore mine and its Sami culture. My dissertation concerns a more recent identity of Kiruna - the so-called space town or future town Kiruna.
My dissertation concerns the making of the Northern Swedish town Kiruna as a so-called "space town". Kiruna municipality is known (among other things) for its Sami culture, iron ore industry, and sublime nature. Since the 1950s, a new industry has started to take root with space physics research and associated rocket technology as its foundation. Recently, there are plans of commercial space tourism. In my study I will analyse the processes which has formed this space town, with a focus on space physics science and technology.
