Research project
It is known that liver metastases from colorectal cancer can grow in different ways; what has emerged in recent years is that this predicts how patients fare after liver surgery. There is also evidence to support that it can be used to make better use of oncological treatments. In this way, patients can receive personalised treatment and the survival of affected patients can be improved.
Colorectal cancer is the third most common type of cancer in the world and in Sweden more than 6,000 people are diagnosed each year. 30-35 % of patients with colorectal cancer will be diagnosed with liver metastases (CLM) and for them, the only hope of achieving a lasting cure is to have their liver metastases surgically removed. Patients with CLL are a large group of patients in Sweden and the number of patients eligible for liver surgery is increasing annually. The 5-year survival rate for patients who undergo surgery exceeds 50%, which is unique for metastatic cancer.
