PhD project
The sami political movement was initially upheld by a limited number of people who had a significant impact on its continued evolvement during the 20th century. One of these, was Israel Ruong, who aimed to improve the conditions of the sami people. Amongst other things, he had a particular interest in education and its importance for the sami collective, as well as for the individual.
His importance has been highlighted within research as well as in other contexts; however, there is no in-depth work about Ruong’s life nor his professional life with a biographical perspective yet. With my PhD-project, I aim to do an in-depth analysis of Israel Ruong’s professional life, and with a biographical perspective describe and analyse his aims for, as well as his effect on, the sustainability of the sami collective; with main focus on his educational achievements.
