Initiatives for young people with mental health problems and disability who are not in employment, education (NEET): a scoping review
Research project
This project includes a scoping review about initiatives for young people with mental health problems and disabilities who are not in employment, education, or training (NEET).
The aim of this project is to synthesize academic and gray literature about initiatives for young people aged 16-29 with mental health problems and disabilities who are not in employment, education, or training (NEET). The review directs attention to young people who are in “NEET” situations while limiting the scope to those with mental health problems and/or disabilities. The goal is to contribute with a broad and deep understanding of the current state of knowledge, focusing on what works, and why, in meeting support needs and promoting (re)engagements in education or employment.
The situation of young people who are not in employment, education, or training (NEET) has received increased attention nationally and internationally during the last decade. When it comes to knowledge about initiatives for this group, there is relatively good evidence about “what works” to promote employment among those who are regularly unemployed. Less knowledge exists about initiatives for young people who are neither studying nor registered at the Public Employment Service. Within this latter group, young people with mental health problems and disability are overrepresented, which means that there is a great need for knowledge about initiatives that can meet their support needs and promote (re)engagements in education or employment.
Aim and research questions
The aim of the project is to synthesize knowledge about initiatives for young people with mental health problems and disability who are not in employment, education, or training based on the following questions:
What types of initiatives are offered, and how do these relate to the group's support needs?
Do the initiatives promote (re)engagements in education or employment, and if so, how and for whom?
The project is carried out in the form of a scoping review with a focus on systematically examining and analysing scientific and grey literature relevant to Swedish conditions. The goal is to contribute to a broad and deep understanding of the current state of knowledge, to identify more precise knowledge gaps and to give concrete recommendations for policy.
