Research project
In 2002 The Center for Sami Research was granted a project support from the The Bank of Sweden Tercentenary Foundation, aimed for the establishment of a reserach environment. The project consists of three parts; Population Data Base Sápmi, a Lule-Sami word book, and the work of a project assistant.
When the Board of Umeå University in 2002 took the decision of the establishment ofa Center for ami Reseach, an intensive formation process begun. The aimhas been to initiate, develop, and coordinate research activities with a Sami or indigenous thematic. The project suppport from The Bank of Sweden Tercentenary Foundation has been an important contribution to the realization of an ambitious plan. Access to source material and research communication have been higlighted in the project. Accordingly, three parts have been included, the construction of Popultion Data Base Sápmi, a Lule-Sami word book, and the work aimed for outreching contacts.
With the project support from The Bank of Sweden Tercentenary Foundation made it possible for the Center for Sami Research to put important corner stones in place. A very important work for the improvement of source materials has been the Population Data Base Sapmi. It is the basis for several succesful research applications, and is an internationally unique material. The Lule-Sami word bokk was constructed by professor Olavi Korhonen at the Department of Archeaology and Sami Studies at Umeå University. Moreover, a project assistant was recruited, ith a great responsibility for project management, outreaching activities, publications, conferences and webpage deveopment.
