How can risk communication be improved in primary care?

Research project Communicating disease risk is an important but challenging task in disease prevention. Poor risk communication and misperception of risk often lead to low adherence to preventive treatment. Together with patients and health professionals, we want to study how image-based information can be integrated into disease prevention work in primary care and evaluate the health economic value.

Project description

Communicating disease risk is an important but challenging task in disease prevention. Poor risk communication and misperception of risk often lead to low adherence to preventive treatment. New research shows that image-based risk communication based on existing imaging techniques in healthcare, such as ultrasound imaging of blood vessels, can contribute to better understanding and prevention.

However, ultrasound imaging of blood vessels is currently a hospital-based technique that requires extensive training, which limits access for primary care patients. We want to improve risk communication with a newly developed support system for ultrasound measurement of atherosclerosis in blood vessels with automated interpretation. The system enables image-based risk communication regarding cardiovascular disease risk to be introduced in primary care.

In this project, we want to study how the system can be integrated into the disease prevention work in primary care in a co-creative process with patients and healthcare professionals.
