Emotion regulation, motivational style, mental health and risk of sports injury in young elite athletes
PhD project
This thesis studies the mechanisms of how emotion regulation impacts mental health in the short and long term, how it is influenced by coaching and how it is impacted by challenges such as sports injury, and how it influences sport participation and performance.
Young elite athletes attending upper secondary school are faced with high demands as they are trying to manage both their athletic as well as academic career. Helping to cope with these demands, emotion regulation might be at the center, acting as a buffer helping young athletes to manage challenges, such as sports injuries, while still fully experiencing the positive emotions from success. Emotion regulation is, however, not developed in a vaccuum, and their social environment, in the form of the coach and peers, might impact this ability.
