Crime Victims in the Swedish Press 1995 - 2005

Research project Media depictions of crime have proven to be of great importance to how crime victims manage to deal with their future lives. In the light of this, far too few studies of medialized constructions of "the crime victim" - as social type - have been carried out.

The aim of this project is to analyze media representations of crime victims in a relatively large sample of Swedish press coverage. Firstly, a quantitative study will be carried out in order to capture general patterns. Secondly, a smaller selection of texts will be made the subject of closer qualitative investigation. This second study will focus upon narratives about victims of crimes with racist, xenophobic, antisemitic, Islamophobic or homophobic features. This choice has been made since a number of actors have stressed the need for more research on such so called hate crimes.
