Conveying basic values – Methods for moral reasoning and teachers’ attitudes to values

Research project Besides the task of conveying knowledge to their pupils, Swedish teachers are also assigned to convey certain basic values. It is an important question how well prepared Swedish teachers are for this latter task.

In a secular society like Sweden, people tend to view value-questions as a private matter. It might be problematic to reconcile this view on value-questions with the task - applying to all Swedish teachers - of conveying certain basic values. In the project we raise the question of how to prepare teacher students for this task. How can one work with questions about attitudes to values? What tools can be conveyed to the students to prepare them for this task? A thesis that we want to test is that part of the answer is to focus the ethics education on methods for moral reasoning rather than ethical theories.
