PhD project
within the Industrial Doctoral School at Umeå university. The project ended on 17 November 2023 when Josef Siljebo completed his PhD.
This project specifically highlights the conditions for a school’s digitisation created by the active leadership exercised by those occupying positions of leadership in schools.
The emphasis is on describing, explaining and understanding the conditions under which those occupying positions of leadership in schools exercise strategic leadership with the intention of strengthening the school’s operations with the support of digitisation. The study will highlight local factors that affect the content and meaning of adequate digital skills. This knowledge can be taken into account when developing and testing new pedagogical methods.
The study will combine a number of methods in its various sub-studies in order to achieve the best possible results; for example, some mapping of school operations will be conducted using quantitative data, while the participation of school leaders in continuing professional development with teachers will generate qualitative data. The results will then be compiled for analysis.
The project clearly aligns with Sweden’s National Digitisation Strategy for Schools published in October 2017 and the associated action plan (currently under development), in which particular importance is attached to ensuring digital skills for all. The action plan also emphasises the importance of researching and following up the possibilities of digitisation. In this project, Atea, HP, Intel and Umeå University are at the forefront of research into what adequate digital skills for school leaders are.
