Cryo-EM sample preparation and data collection course 17-19 October 2023
The purpose of the course is to prepare and train Cryo-EM facility users in sample preparation methods, introduce users to the image data acquisition workflow, expand knowledge about cryo-EM methods among researchers and show that everyone can learn how to use cryo-EM for structure and cell biology.
Basic Course in Scanning and Transmission Electron Microscopy (SEM/TEM) for Life Sciences (1 ECTS) 26-28 September 2023
This course covers lectures and practical demonstrations in SEM and TEM techniques, specifically for life science applications. The contents include principles of electron microscopy, specimen preparation, cryo-electron microscopy and correlative light-electron microscopy.
For electron microscopy in physical science applications, there will be a similar-content basic course in early 2024.
Basic Course in Scanning and Transmission Electron Microscopy (SEM/TEM) for Physical Sciences (1 ECTS) 21-23 February 2023
This course covers lectures and practical demonstrations in SEM and TEM techniques, specifically for materials science applications. The contents include principles of focused electron and ion beam microscopy, specimen preparation for EM imaging and advancements in electron microscopy such as high-resolution TEM, scanning TEM, electron diffraction, elemental analysis and in-situ electron microscopy. We encourage applications from doctoral students, postdoctoral researchers and technical staff in the field of physics, chemistry and geology with materials-of-interests such as metals, ceramics, polymers, semiconductors, optical and electronic materials, biomaterials and nanomaterials. For electron microscopy in life science applications, there will be similar-content basic course in autumn 2023.
Workshop on Advanced Correlative Light and Electron Microscopy (CLEM) methods 5-8 December 2022
This 4-day workshop aims to highlight the advanced correlative light and electron microscopy (CLEM) techniques. Participants will learn the latest workflows on how to correlate fluorescence microscopy images with high resolution EM images obtained from state-of-the-art equipment.

New and just started EM users are invited to an introduction to all different possibilities and method offered at the facility. It is a condensed summary of all different EM instruments and sample preparation equipment at UmU. We will talk about EM functions, method and discuss results, images and information you can expect from an EM project. Experienced users are also welcome, if you like to learn something new, join selected topics.
