Public health

Public health is an interdisciplinary discipline that studies human health and well-being related to the environment, social conditions and lifestyles. The area includes research on preventive measures and promotion of health in the population - locally, nationally and globally.

Public health science forms an important basis for practical public health work and also includes health economics and knowledge of the organization and working methods of health care.

A public health perspective can be applied within medical disciplines such as epidemiology, general medicine, behavioral medicine, internal medicine, global health, community medicine, social medicine, occupational and environmental medicine, rehabilitation and nursing.

VHU, Västerbottens HälsoUndersökningar, has been collecting data and samples from the population for more than 30 years, which are now stored in Biobanken Norr. This valuable research infrastructure provides unique opportunities to study changes in public health over time and the importance of various factors for maintaining health and the risk of developing various diseases, e.g. cardiovascular disease.
