What to do in case of an attack

NEWS The school shooting in Örebro has given reason to discuss how to act in the event of a violent attack. All students and staff are encouraged to read the information available on the University’s websites. “Umeå University is a safe and secure place, but it’s good to know what to do should anything happen,” says Per Ragnarsson, chairperson of the Crisis Management Team at Umeå University.

The term “ongoing lethal violence” used in Sweden has been a topical subject after the attacks in Sweden and in other places around the world, not least after the school shooting in Örebro on 4 February, where several lives were lost.

The likelihood of an attack using deadly force occurring at Umeå University is low, but the consequences could be very serious. There is hence always reason to be prepared. The student website has information on how to act in the case of an attack. The main principles are Run, Hide, Tell.

“What happened in Örebro is terrible, and we naturally hope that it will never happen again – anywhere. But it’s important that Umeå University has preparedness to handle serious incidents and that as many people as possible know how to act if anything happens,” says Per Ragnarsson, chairperson of the Crisis Management Team at Umeå University.

On the student website, there is also an informative film and a web-based distance learning course from the Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency that prepares you for what you can do in the event of an attack.

There is also a web page with information about the University’s campus security officers. They are there to provide security on campus.
