The annual Welcome Fair attracted many students who learnt more about what the University and local organisations have to offer. The outdoor Campus Square was bustling with life, and inside, informative presentations attracted visitors.
At the start of every autumn semester, the Welcome Fair is organised for new students exhibiting a smorgasbord of activities and information from what Umeå University, Umeå and the county have to offer students. On display were the University’s services, student activities, local authorities, companies and associations of all kinds.
On the Campus Square outside of Universum, a concert with the student orchestra Snösvänget became a popular attraction, sled dogs from local tourism companies waited to be scratched behind the ear, and several sporty challenges were offered for strong and daring visitors. IKSU cross-country skiing also had their ski trainer machine onboard, which attracted some curiosity.
“It’s been fun, and lots of visitors have stopped by our table,” says Tuva Persson, member of IKSU cross-country skiing and student at the Umeå School of Sport Sciensces.
“More visitors than expected wanted to try out the ski trainer, and several showed an interest in training with us. People also started following us on social media today, so we’re pleased,” she says.
New for 2023 were the short informative sessions held in Hörnrummet in Universum on inspirational themes relevant to new students. Anything from how to cut down on the food bill to improving your study technique, as well as mental health tips. In Rotundan, presentations were held along with performances by local cultural associations.
The Welcome Fair is aimed at new students at Umeå University, and showcases both what the University and Umeå can offer.

Appreciated start of the semester
Ellen Wiegner is a new ecology student at Umeå University, who merely three weeks ago packed up her things in Germany and moved to Umeå. She appreciated the fair being held as it allows new students to get acquainted with the community in a good way.
“They had a fair at my previous university too, but it was much smaller and not at all as nice as this one. It’s nice to get a glimpse of what there is to do here and get a good impression of Umeå and the University,” she says.
