Biodiversity is the variation among living organisms and the ecological relationships and processes that the organisms are part of. May 22 is International Biodiversity Day. The day has been instituted by the UN to draw attention to the importance of biodiversity for life on earth.
Maintaining biodiversity is crucial for a well-functioning ecosystem. Therefore, this is very close to our hearts at Umeå Marine Sciences Centre. For example, we have expertise in the determination of phytoplankton, zooplankton, benthic animals and macrovegetation.
We study the ecosystem of the oceans and follow the development of the state of the marine environment. This includes both research and environmental monitoring on biodiversity. Here are some examples of the activities conducted at Umeå Marine Research Centre.
Most of the oxygen consumption in oceans is driven by maintenance activities. What are the maintenance activities of marine bacteria and how are they regulated?
