Umeå University stands strong in global ranking

NEWS Seven subjects at Umeå University are ranked highly in the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2016, which is more than ever. Nursing is now a new subject among the ones listed for Umeå University.

“It feels rewarding to see an increasing number of subjects being ranked as globally prominent. It is a sure sign that our aims are set in the right direction. Although placements in rankings shouldn’t be over-emphasized as a true measurement of quality, they are still important for our visibility and attractiveness for students and collaborative partners alike,” says Lena Gustafsson, Vice-Chancellor at Umeå University.

Seven ranked subjects is a record for Umeå University, which means that the University places itself top 350 in the QS World University Ranking by Subject 2016. In the new subject category Nursing, Umeå University positions itself at place 51–100. The best ranking on Umeå University’s part is achieved in Art and Design, 41st place, which itself is an improvement from last year’s 51-100th place when the subject was first added to the ranking.

“This placement is the University’s best ever in any subject, and having Art and Design at such a high place is proof of the University’s prominent international position within the field,” says Lena Gustafsson.

Umeå University is again listed as leading in Geography, on place 101-150, Biology is placed at 151–200, and Medicine – for 2016 placed at 201–250 in the World. Environmental Sciences can be found at place 251–300 and Chemistry at Umeå University positions itself at place 301–350.

This is the sixth consecutive year that QS World University Rankings by Subject is carried out. In total, it covers 42 subjects at close to 2,691 of the leading higher education institutions in the world. Besides analyses of citations, the ranking is based on answers from academics and employers who rank educations and research in chosen subjects at higher education institutions around the world.

In the elite in most subjects are leading American and British universities such as the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Harvard University, Stanford University, University of Cambridge and University of Oxford.
