Umeå School of Business, Economics and Statistics launches new programme together with Hanken

NEWS A new one-year Master's programme in Sustainability Reporting and Financial Analysis is launched as a collaboration between Umeå School of Business, Economics and Statistics (USBE) and Hanken School of Economics in Vaasa. The programme is one year long and students study one semester at each university and get a double degree within the new reporting rules introduced by the EU this summer.

– This is the first programme at Umeå University that can offer a double degree, which we believe, and hope will increase interest in the programme. We also see it as a way of strengthening cooperation across Kvarken and preparing our students for an international labour market in an excellent way”, says Mats Bergman, Dean at Umeå School of Business, Economics and Statistics.

Highly sought-after knowledge

The students who take the programme will probably be in high demand as, since July this year, there are completely new requirements for companies with over 500 employees to report according to the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD), the so-called ESG reporting requirements. This means increased transparency on how large companies impact their environment and society, but also on how they are governed.

– There is an increasing need for professionals who can deal with the global challenges and institutional regulation related to the financial and ESG reporting requirements. The new master's programme responds to this need, says Dennis Sundvik, Assistant Professor of Accounting at Hanken.

One semester on each side of Kvarken

The Master's Programme in Sustainability Reporting and Financial Analysis covers 60 credits and has a total of 60 places.

The first semester is in Umeå and the second on the other side of Kvarken, in Vaasa. During the autumn semester in Umeå, students study 30 credits of financial analysis and risk management. During the spring semester in Vaasa, there are 15 points of sustainable finance and ESG analysis and an essay that gives 15 points.

Applications are open from now on and a maximum of 60 students will be admitted to the new programme.
