Travelling between countries can pose a risk of spreading viruses and diseases. Stay updated on the situation if you are travelling for work or study.
At the end of September, the Ministry of Health in Rwanda announced that there is an outbreak of Marburg virus in the country. Marburg virus can cause haemorrhagic fever with a high mortality rate. The disease is rare, but has been reported in a number of countries in sub-Saharan Africa.
Currently, there are no students or staff from Umeå University in Rwanda and the World Health Organisation (WHO) assesses that the risk of global spread of Marburg virus is low, but that there is a high risk of transmission in the African region.
This outbreak is an example of why it is very important to always stay updated on the situation and follow the advice and recommendations of the Public Health Agency of Sweden and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs when travelling abroad, for example for work or study.
The government's website has good advice and recommendations for travelling abroad, covering everything from the security situation to diseases and other things that can affect you as a traveller.
