Cooperation with lime kiln manufacturers in Italy to reduce carbon dioxide emissions in the production of quicklime.
Since its establishment in 2019, the Centre for Sustainable Cement and Quicklime Production (CHECK) has attracted the interest of several actors in the industry. As a result of this, a collaboration between the lime kiln manufacturer Cimprogetti Slr. and CHECK has been launched via a joint research project to work on some of the industry's key challenges and research questions.
The project aims to develop a simulation tool to efficiently support the necessary decisions regarding the implementation of oxygen and hydrogen enriched combustion in full-scale lime kiln production, which would enable the reduction of carbon dioxide emissions and energy consumption. The simulation tool is based on CFD-DEM and several kiln geometries and fuels will be studied.
The participants have now met during a project meeting and study visit where, among other things, Fornaci Zulian's Cimprogetti TSR lime kiln, which has been burning high-value solid biomass for many years, and Cimprogetti's lime laboratory were visited. Within CHECK, projects are already underway to study the introduction of biofuels in cement and lime production.
Other participants in the project consortium are Volupe AB, Kalkproduktion Storugns AB and Swedish Mineral Processing Research Association - MinFo.
