Umeå University, in collaboration with the projects Digital Impact North, AI Policy Lab and ENAIBLER, recently hosted a seminar aimed at developing a comprehensive AI policy and framework for Västerbotten region. The event brought together key stakeholders from across the region and continued the dialogue initiated during a workshop at the Digital Impact North Summit 2024 in September.
The seminar was moderated by Ulf Hedestig, Digital Impact North/Enaibler, and Henry Lopez Vega, AI Policy Lab, who earlier this year facilitated the workshop How can we strengthen AI-driven initiatives and become a regional leader? The program featured an inspiring lecture by Professor Virginia Dignum, a distinguished member of the UN High-Level Advisory Body on AI and the EU's High-Level Expert Group on AI. During the workshop, attendees engaged in in-depth discussions on the current AI challenges facing the region. They explored collaborative strategies to leverage existing resources and assets to enhance AI capabilities.
Perspectives on a Regional AI Coordination
"Exchanging experiences in a rapidly evolving field like AI is crucial. While different organizations have varying needs, there are always similarities that allow us to learn valuable lessons from one another," says Fredrik Lekander, Norra Skog.
"Regional coordination strengthens the national perspective by focusing on local needs, which are often overshadowed by metropolitan areas. A collaboration between academia, research, and the public sector is crucial. At RISE, we are committed to actively contributing to the development of a regional AI strategy," said Susanne Thurén from RISE.
Next Steps
The meeting concluded with plans for a follow-up workshop in the first quarter of 2025, which will focus on leadership in building a regional AI framework. This upcoming session will prioritize initiatives and focus areas to boost innovation and adoption of AI among SMEs and public authorities in Västerbotten.
