In a policy brief for the Austrian Society of European Politics, FairTax researcher Margit Schratzenstaller and her colleague Atanas Pekanov argue that the EU Member States must have the courage for a pragmatic approach to the debate about the European Economic and Monetary Union. This to be able to implement necessary reforms which are eventually in their own interest.
The proposal to establish a Euro Treasury with an own budget is to be welcomed, but could be complemented with concrete options for sustainability-oriented tax-based own resources. The reflexions of the European Commission on a fundamental reform of the EMU are to be combined with those on the social dimension of the EMU.
