Open Athens - easier access to e-resources

NEWS You can now identify yourself with your Umu-id for direct access to many databases and other e-resources. This means it is easier to access e-resources without going through the library search tool.

As of 15 October, Umeå University Library is using the service Open Athens. This means that you can identify yourself with your Umu-id to access many databases and e-resources directly.

Open Athens is a single-sign-on (SSO) service, which means that your browser recognises if you are already logged in with your Umu-id somewhere else (for example, the library search tool or Canvas).

– I don't think that our students and staff will notice this change very much as Open Athens makes it easier to access the articles, databases and e-books provided by Umeå University Library, says Fredrik Ragnarsson at Umeå University Library and continues:

– Open Athens also increases security by reducing the dependence on giving access to resources via IP addresses. Accessing resources this way is a method that is not completely secure and can be exploited to access resources illegally. More and more publishers are supporting federated login via Open Athens, so things are moving in the right direction, Fredrik Ragnarsson observes.

When you use the library search tool to access e-resources, you are also directed via Open Athens. However, if you are logged in to the search tool, you will rarely notice this.
