Nobel in the archives

NEWS The library’s Archives and Special Collections contain many connections to Nobel Prize laureates as well as personalities who have worked at the Nobel Foundation.

Archives and Special Collections manages many archives of famous Swedish authors, in which you can find correspondence from multiple Nobel Laureates in Literature. Some of these are:

  • Eyvind Johnsson - Nobel Prize in Literature 1974
  • Nadine Gordimer - Nobel Prize in Literature 1991
  • Tomas Tranströmer - Nobel Prize in Literature 2011
  • Halldór Laxness - Nobel Prize in Literature 1955
  • Nelly Sachs - Nobel Prize in Literature 1966
  • Seamus Heaney - Nobel Prize in Literature 1995.

The archives also contain letters from Peace Prize Laureate and UN Secretary-General Dag Hammarskjöld, who was awarded the prize posthumously in 1961.

Among our collections are the archives of Professor Gunnar Öquist, who served as Secretary of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences between 2003 and 2010. The archive contains material from Gunnar Öquist's career. Anyone wishing to specifically look at material from his work in the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences and the Prize in Physiology or Medicine can contact Nobelkansliet.

In addition, work is underway to organise the archive of Professor Kalle Löfgren, who was active for many years on the committee for Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel (commonly referred to as the Nobel Prize in Economics).

There are several ways to search among other archives with Nobel connections. If you are interested in archival documents relating to the Nobel Prize in Literature, you can contact the Swedish Academy.

Material from the Peace Prize archive can be accessed by contacting the Norwegian Nobel Committee.
