Campus Umeå continues to grow and develop. Just behind Aula Nordica, the construction of a whole new building will start this December. This building will primarily be used for exams, teaching and as a place for the University’s 37 000 students to study.
The new building will be a key detail in solving the challenge of losing our current Umeå examination halls from summer 2024. Umeå University currently has around 37 000 students.
“It is critical that the University can offer modern and functional exam halls that provide a healthy work environment. The new premises are also more accessible thanks to their location in the middle of campus. They are easy to reach through indoor walkways and outdoors via cycle paths and adjacent bus stops,” says Hans Wiklund, University Director at Umeå University.
The opportunities this new building have to offer are plentiful: roomy examination halls, additional seating for self-studies during off-peak periods, and a new café. There will also be room for other types of places to meet and office space.

In December, preparatory work will commence and fencing will be put up around the construction site. According to the plan, students and staff will be abe to start using the premises in spring 2025.
“Umeå University safeguards having a cohesive main campus full of life. The new premises will be flexible and be readily available for self-studies, meetings and other gatherings during the big portion of the year when there are no exams. That’s why these premises will also create opportunities for students and others to organise and participate in activities and gatherings on campus,” continues Hans Wiklund.
From summer 2024 until early 2025, Umeå University will not have a cohesive solution for exam halls. A plan to temporarily solve the issue for that time period is underway.
