– The course is a smorgasbord for those interested in the northern part of Scandinavia. Students will learn about the Nordic region through language and literature, for example by reading and discussing contemporary fiction, says Daniel Andersson, Head of the Department of Language Studies and one of the teachers on the course.
The course is a smorgasbord for those interested in the northern part of Scandinavia.
Introduction to Language and Culture in Northern Scandinavia is a part-time course taught without mandatory meetings.
– We want to make it easy for students to combine the course with other studies and work. We also want to include students who do not live in Sweden but are studying Scandinavian studies in other countries.
The course is divided into four parts: two have linguistic focus and two have a literary focus. It includes an overview of minority languages in the area, both in present-day circumstances and how the languages have evolved over time.
– The industrialisation taking place in Northern Sweden makes people move here from all over the world, which brings a linguistic richness. However, this area has always been multilingual but in other ways. The course will give students a comprehensive introduction to the unique linguistic and cultural landscape that exists in the Nordic region.
