Nelson Gekara receives SEK 9 million grant from the Swedish Research Council

The Swedish Research Council (Vetenskapsrådet) recently gave Umeå University researcher Nelson Gekara a total of SEK 9 million over 6 years in consolidation grant. According to the Swedish Research Council, the consolidation grant, announced for the first time in 2016, give ”the most successful young researchers the opportunity to consolidate their research projects, expand and broaden their research activities.”
Nelson Gekara is Group Leader at The Laboratory for Molecular Infection Medicine Sweden (MIMS) and the Department of Molecular Biology. Gekara’s research group receives the funding for the project The role of DNA-damage signalling proteins in the innate immune system. The grant is SEK 500,000 per year for 2017-2018 and SEK 2,000,000 per year for 2019-2022.
“6 years after starting my group, we are now at a stage where we have many interesting and promising projects. This consolidation grant is very timely and will allow me to expand my research team and follow up on what we have already achieved. I am sincerely grateful for the members of my team who do most of the work and for the important support from the Swedish Research Council,” says Nelson Gekara.
In total, the Swedish Research Council will approve consolidation grants of SEK 221,388,000 for the period 2016-2022. Twenty projects were approved from a total of 307 submissions, which is an approval rate of 6,5 percent. Out of 108 female applicants, eight were approved. There were 198 male applicants and 12 of them were approved.
