Major renovation of the University Library

NEWS The University is investing in an extensive renovation of the University Library (UB) to make it an even more functional and inspiring environment for our visitors. Over two years, the library will be renovated in stages and a more modern library will be finished in 2027.

Acting Head Librarian Malin Josefsson is excited about the launch of the new library:

"I envisage that in the new library we will be able to welcome our visitors to new, updated study areas of various kinds. Above the Learning Space, we will have a new landscape of quiet reading areas and this is also where our new resource rooms will be located. Here, a fantastic social staircase will connect the floors and constitute a future meeting point," says Malin Josefsson.

Umeå University Library, Norrland's largest library, is a well-visited environment with about 3500–4000 visitors every day in its premises on campus. The premises have been renovated in various stages over the years. Umeå University's vision for the library's future includes, among other things, an attractive study environment, a visible learning support and that there should be conditions for a long-term media supply.

Through the renovation, a holistic approach is now being taken to create an inviting environment and better orientation in the premises. It will continue to be a mixed environment of literature and space for students and researchers.

Dieter Müller, Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Chairman of the Library Board, is very positive about the renovation:

"The library is a central part of every university, but of course the ways in which students and researchers use library services and facilities are changing. The renovations now provide an excellent opportunity to adapt the library to current and future needs and ensure that the library can continue to contribute its valued services and resources to education and research.
