'Words in Orbit: A Linguistic Inquiry into Outer Space' is the title of the lecture presented by Kajsa Törmä, PhD student at the Department of Language Studies, at the NYU Space Talks organised by NYU Shanghai.
"Understanding all the new ideas and innovations that the modern space industry offers requires new ways of thinking and speaking. This lecture explores how the language we use when talking about outer space is influenced by three key factors: our imagination, our bodies, and our encyclopedic knowledge," says Kajsa Törmä.
Launched in spring 2021, NYU Space Talks is an online lecture series. Each semester, established and emerging scholars present the latest research on the history and politics of outer space, extraterrestrial life, and astroculture, both in Europe and around the globe.
NYU Space Talks are held on Zoom. All are welcome but advance registration is required. Kajsa's lecture will take place on March 13.
