Invitation to researchers to participate in ForskarFredag

NEWS Calling all Umeå researchers! Do you want to take part in ForskarFredag, Sweden's largest science festival, this autumn? Express your interest now and join the fun at Curiosum in September.

Text: Gabrielle Beans

The university has an important role when it comes to sharing knowledge and research with people outside the academy.

ForskarFredag is a part of the international event European Researchers Night that happens throughout the EU on the same day. ForskarFredag is coordinated nationally by Vetenskap och Allmänhet and is usually held in about thirty places across Sweden.

The main purpose of the event is to show members of the public that researchers are ordinary people with unusually exciting jobs. The visitors also get to see that you can do research on pretty much anything, and a career in research can be a very exciting option. In Umeå the event is organized by Curiosum science center at Umeå University, and hundreds of people (primarily children, young people and their families) come to meet the researchers. It is fun for both the visitors, and the researchers.

Mikael Elofsson, Dean of the Faculty of Science and Technology, has taken part in ForskarFredag several times now and agrees.

“It was great fun to talk about research with children and adults of all ages! Making a good popular science presentation is not easy and it is a challenge to think of a good plan. Being at the fantastic Curiosum together with a lot of nice colleagues is of course a bonus!”

Research communication is important

ForskarFredag is not only a lot of fun to take part in, but also an excellent opportunity for researcher to create impact outside of academia. Mikael Elofsson considers this to be the most important reason to take part in the event:

“The university has an important role when it comes to sharing knowledge and research with people outside the academy. One aspect is to show how our research can contribute to being able to handle challenges from both today and the future, for example with climate change and pandemics. Outward-oriented activities must be part of our everyday life and is something that we should prioritize; Curiosum is an important piece of the puzzle by being an exciting meeting place for everyone interested in research.”

What do I do if I find ForskarFredag interesting and exciting?

  • Please register your interest by 14 June 2023 to gabrielle.beans@umu.se

  • There will be an informational meeting May 8, 14,30 in KBC (KBF301) where you can ask Gabrielle more about ForskarFredag and think about how you can take part!

ForskaFredag events

Event 1: "Borrow a researcher" (Låna en forskare) 25-29 September

Researchers present themselves and maybe demonstrate some research to students and teachers. The focus is on you as a researcher, what do you do during the day? What is it like to be a researcher? The target group is the school. Register your interest in Vetenskap och Allmänhet’s platform for "Låna en Forskare" and the school then books you directly. You decide if you want to do physical meetings on site at school or if you want to meet digitally. The schools will be able to book these meetings from August 15.

Register your interest to participate here or email Gabrielle Beans, gabrielle.beans@umu.se, at Curiosum and she will assist you.

Event 2: Cosy Researcher’s Night: Meet, talk and experiment with researchers at Curiosum on Friday 29 September at 16-20

Curiosum will be open and free for visitors to come. There are usually a lot of families with children who want to experiment or talk with you. During Friday's event interactive activities are the best fit, such as experiments, hands-on activities, conversations, shows, or anything else thought of for families with children. Up to 600 people could come to Curiosum on Friday, so it's a fantastic research outreach opportunity! The activities do not have to be complicated! On the contrary, it is usually better for visitors if you can do an experiment or activity easily and relatively quickly. We have had researchers who, for example, experiment with pH using red cabbage as an indicator, show fossils, bring agar plates with interesting microbes, talk about viruses, and much more!

Event 3: ForskarFredag goes Stand-up! Thursday 28 September at 17-18.30

Do you prefer to talk to young adults instead of children and make jokes about science? Then this is the activity for you! In 2021 for the first time, we tried out having researchers perform a stand-up comedy routine about themselves and their research, and it was a great success! You will have 7 minutes to tell an adult audience about something fun, either about you as a person, or about something you encountered during your research. This event will have an audience on site. There will be a comedian moderator who warms up the audience for you, and you will be offered workshops on how to prepare your comedy routine. English speaking comedian scientists are very welcome!

Event 4: Forskar Grand Prix Friday 29 September at 13-15

Take your presentation skills to the next level and become an expert in Science Slam! SLU and the Faculty of Forest Sciences together with Umeå university are organizing the local competition in Researcher’s Grand Prix 2023 – a competition where you will get the chance to be coached in presenting your research in the most interesting way. Don’t miss this unique opportunity to sharpen your presentation skills and reach out with your research to a new audience! One lucky winner will get the golden ticket to the Finale, which will take place at Nalen, Stockholm, in December 2023. The event takes place in Aula Nordica with an audience of students from gymnasium schools in and around Umeå.

Register your interest in the local competition by sending an e-mail to Anna Morén, anna.moren@slu.se before the 31 May 2023. There is space for up to 9 researchers to join.
