Increased interest in international courses and master's programmes at Umeå University

An increasing number of students are interested in studying international undergraduate courses at Umeå University. For the spring semester 2023, the number of applications has more than doubled compared to last spring.

The Swedish Council for Higher Education (UHR) recently presented new admissions statistics showing that the number of applications for international undergraduate courses at Umeå University has increased by 107% in one year. From 2022 to 2023, the number of applications for the spring semester has increased from 630 to 1,305.

"These are encouraging numbers for us at Umeå University," says Heidi Hansson, Deputy Vice-Chancellor with responsibility for educational issues. "We work continuously to become an attractive university for international students by having a good reception. We want to contribute to the dissemination of knowledge globally, whilst at the same time we see great value in international cultural exchange."
Internationalisation and broadened perspectives
Umeå University placed first among the six universities and colleges that have received more applications for their international undergraduate courses for the spring semester 2023 compared to last spring. (The total number of applications exceeds the number of applicants because it is possible to apply for more than one programme.)
Interest has also increased in international Master's programmes at Umeå University, from 423 applications for the spring semester 2022 to 571 for spring 2023, an increase of 35 per cent.
“The international students give us the opportunity to pursue internationalisation at home and broaden the perspectives of our programmes,” says Heidi Hansson.
National figures
Overall in Sweden, 5,573 people have enrolled in spring semester 2023 international undergraduate courses and programmes, an increase of 1,863 compared to spring semester 2022. At the same time, 3,485 people have applied to in spring 2023 international master's programmes, which is 996 more compared to the previous spring.
On 6 October, applicants for international undergraduate courses and programmes will receive their notification of admission results. Master's programmes applicants will be notified on 20 October.
