"I Can See the World from Here" – Jens Assur portrays university life in Umeå at Bildmuseet 3 June–9 sept
NEWS
Photographer Jens Assur has resided in a student corridor in Umeå for several weeks during the past year, lived the student life and experienced studies, parties and ordinary days. A selection of his photographs from Umeå University will be on display during the summer at Bildmuseet in the exhibition I Can See the World from Here.
With the camera’s aid, Jens Assur narrates about people, meetings, atmosphere and feelings. He has been to lectures and exams, visited labs and research rooms, and participated in student union events and academic ceremonies. He has photographed everything from fitness classes to brain operations.
Assur has captured this world in a warm, personal and humorous way. His images express a scaled-down, straightforward and balanced illustration of life at Umeå University.
A newly released book with the title I Can See the World from Here contains 100 pictures from the project. Just over 30 of these photos will be on display in large format in the exhibition at Bildmuseet, the museum of contemporary art and visual culture at Umeå University.
Jens Assur (b. 1970) is a photographer and filmmaker with a series of exhibitions, books and projects to his name. His short film The Last Dog of Rwanda recently won prizes at short film festivals at Palm Springs in USA, Clermont-Ferrand in France and at Flickerfest in Australia. The exhibition "I Can See the World from Here" is collaboration between Umeå University, Studio Jens Assur, Bildmuseet at Umeå University and Färgfabriken.
