Health on campus is arranged once every semester and offers something for everyone. The event is intended to inspire and motivate students and employees to physical activity and at the same time increase knowledge about physical activity and wellbeing. The event is always free of charge.
"Once again, we can present a programme with a varied range of lectures and activities to the University's students and employees. The autumn event attracted 2,222 participants – now we hope to break a new record in number of participants," says Pernilla Eriksson, project manager for Health on Campus.
Some highlights from the programme
Health on Campus on 13 February offers some new exciting activities as well as some repeated favourites.
"We have had a high pressure on cross-country skiing over the years. Health on Campus in February offers open trail cross-country on the campus fields as well as bookable cross-country skiing lessons in both classic style and freestyle skiing, interval sessions with IKSU Längdskidor and touring skis in the archipelago with IKSU Frilufts," says Tove Mårs, project coordinator.
Among the news is the workshop "Dare to be vegetarian", which includes hands-on cooking to inspire and motivate people to cook more vegetarian dishes. Together with Vän i Umeå, students and employees are offered the opportunity to try beginner yoga in Bildmuseet's largest hall.
"Another novelty is the opportunity to try out Lindy Hop dancing together with the organisation Swingum in the Ljusgården Atrium in the Teacher Education Building. No prior knowledge is required, just show up and have fun," continues Tove Mårs.
Registration for activities requiring preregistration opens on 29 January.
Health promoting knowledge
Health on Campus offers a number of lectures to promote awareness and knowledge about physical activity and health.
On site in Aula Nordica, Stig Wiklund, one of Sweden’s leading mental health coaches, and Amanda Lahti, resident physician in general medicine and researcher at Lund University, will hold a lecture. Amanda Lahti's lecture is on the effects of a sedentary life and that every step counts.
"Amanda will explain why it's so important to break up long periods of physical inactivity – how every small positive change in everyday life will affect your health in a positive direction. Stig Wiklund will share the basics of mental strength making us go from thought to action. He explains how we can make lasting and positive changes in life using the power of thought," says Pernilla Eriksson.
Among the pre-recorded digital lectures is Steven Nordin, Professor of Psychology at Umeå University. He will explain why it is so difficult to follow good health advice. Another lecturer is Monika Björn who is an author and has been working full-time with exercise, yoga and health for over 25 years. In recent years, Monika Björn has profiled herself as one of Sweden’s most renowned menopause activists.
"We really looking forward to Health on Campus on 13 February and hope to share the day with many students and employees. Welcome to a inspiring day in motion!" says Pernilla Eriksson.
