ImagePer Melander– My current research focuses on translation of address forms in crime fiction. I am examining Polish translations of detective novels written by American, Swedish and Norwegian writers.
Address forms are indicators of the relations between the characters and the socio-cultural norms within which they operate.
– A translator of crime fiction needs to possess good linguistic skills and a considerable amount of pragmatic cross-cultural knowledge. My aim is to identify the strategies Polish translators adopt when translating address forms, and the difficulties they encounter in the process.
Agata is an associate professor at the Centre for Linguistics Studies at the University of Bialystok, located in North-east Poland. The university has nine faculties and hosts approximately 9,000 students in 30 fields of studies.
– I came to Umeå because I wanted to spend my research visit at a university of a similar size to the University of Bialystok. I have never been here before but my impression of the city and university is that everything is very well organised – and spacious!
