Forests and security take center stage at Future Forests seminar

NEWS In an era marked by climate change and geopolitical uncertainty, forests have emerged as a focal point for discussions on sustainability, resilience, and national security. This intersection of critical issues was explored in depth at Future Forests' recent seminar, 'Northern forests’ role in security, stability and sustainability'. The event brought together researchers from diverse disciplines to examine the challenges and opportunities facing our forests in the coming years.

The seminar, held on October 17, 2024, highlighted the multifaceted role of forests in society - from energy supply and economic growth to biodiversity and climate adaptation. Experts unanimously agreed on the forest's key role in Sweden's future security and stability, while also pointing out the complex challenges that must be addressed.

The event shed light on how the organization of our social, political, and economic systems during peacetime affects our crisis preparedness. To enhance societal resilience, it's crucial to view forests as an integral part of this preparedness and adopt a broader security perspective on forest resources.

Energy resilience emerged as a recurring theme throughout the seminar. The potential of forest biomass as a sustainable energy source was emphasized, particularly during times of crisis. Simultaneously, the need for government measures to ensure stable energy supply was stressed, as the market alone cannot guarantee the necessary adaptations.

Ownership structures and forest management were also discussed. With half of Sweden's forests under private ownership, often by non-resident landowners, questions arose about ensuring sustainable and secure management. Experts highlighted the need for increased knowledge and support for forest owners to handle future risks and opportunities. The seminar also explored the psychological aspects of forest ownership and risk management, with research indicating increased risk awareness among forest owners but challenges in translating this awareness into concrete actions.

In her closing remarks, Janina Priebe, Co-Director for Future Forests, emphasized the crucial link between forests and security. She highlighted the unique role of forests in representing stability and long-term thinking:

It's fascinating to see this connection between forests and security. Because trees take so long to grow, they embody the idea of stability and long-term thinking. But all of this is now being challenged by climate change and the changing geopolitical landscape.

The seminar, which brought together 15 on-site participants and 20 online attendees, is part of Future Forests' ongoing efforts to develop new knowledge for sustainable forest development and forestry. By combining perspectives from natural sciences, social sciences, and humanities, the platform aims to find balanced solutions to future forestry challenges.
