Forest enthusiasts gather for German forestry insights

NEWS Future Forests research platform recently hosted a delightful Christmas networking event, bringing together forestry researchers and enthusiasts to explore innovative forestry practices inspired by field studies in Germany.

On December 11, 2024, Future Forests wrapped up the year with an inspiring Christmas gathering that offered fresh insights and warm camaraderie. Held at Galaxen Sirius in Umeå, the event attracted students, researchers, and forest enthusiasts who exchanged ideas and explored the future of sustainable forestry.

A highlight of the event was Erland Mårald’s presentation on a recent forestry excursion to Germany. Erland, a professor at the Department of Historical, Philosophical and Religious Studies, shared engaging insights from the trip. The excursion gave participants an opportunity to study how modern methods for climate adaptation and resilience can strengthen forestry in an era of change.

Attendees also viewed a slideshow illustrating the journey and the premiere of the first episode of the documentary series FLICKER. Produced by Bitzer Productions AB, the series explores how climate change is reshaping forestry. The episode screened during the event compared forestry practices in southern Germany with Swedish conditions, showcasing adaptations to address drought and damage challenges.

In addition to the presentations and film screening, the excursion spotlighted key aspects of sustainable forestry, including balancing ecological and economic goals through selective logging and tree species diversification, as well as innovative solutions to manage browsing pressure from wildlife.

The event was more than a platform for knowledge exchange—it was an opportunity to build connections in a welcoming setting. One participant described the event as

a truly cozy gathering that brilliantly combined inspiration and togetherness

Future Forests continues to bridge the gap between research and society, with this year’s Christmas event underscoring the platform’s vital role as a meeting place for exchanging ideas and envisioning the future of sustainable forestry.
