Mark Lindholm's thesis on periodontitis, which he presented at Umeå University, has been named the best of the year by the Swedish Dental Association.
Mark Lindholm submitted his thesis at the end of 2022. The studies that were included show that periodontitis seems to be increasing in 15-year-olds in Västerbotten. Periodontitis is an infectious disease that, if left untreated, can lead to tooth loss. Lindholm's thesis shows that the disease can be detected at an early stage with a regular X-ray examination.
Mark Lindholm's reaction to being praised by the society is, according to Tandläkartidningen, "tremendous" and "surprising".

“There is a lot of competition in the country, so it is very honorable and full of glory. It was big just to finish the thesis and to discuss it, so getting the prize is an extra bonus. I had very good people around me, with talented and driven supervisors and a rewarding research environment. I hope that it may permeate my thesis - that I was able to bring out everything I have learned over the years. It was a lot of fun writing the thesis and I felt that I was developing all the time”, says Mark Lindholm to Tandläkartidningen.
Furthermore, he highlights the combination of basic research and clinical research as an important factor.
Mark Lindholm finishes his ST education in periodontology at Umeå University with a degree on December 1. At the same time, he is looking for a job as a specialist.
The prize is awarded at the opening of this year's edition of the Dental Association's general meeting, Wednesday 15 November.
