On Sunday, January 27th Bildmuseet opens two new exhibitions. Welcome to the press preview on Thursday, January 24th at 10:00 am. Daniel Canogar will be present.
The exhibitions will be opened by museum director Katarina Pierre on Sunday, February 27 at 14:00. Daniel Canogar makes a presentation of his exhibition at 14:30. (The exhibition Soviet Mythology in Latvian Art opens on the same day).
The rapid technological development of the film medium is the inspiration for Spanish artist Daniel Canogar. The exhibition Quadratura, his first solo exhibition in Scandinavia, presents four multimedia installations where the artist recycles outdated technology: 35mm celluloid, VHS tapes, analogue television screens and soon to be outdated DVDs. The artist uses these materials as surfaces on which video animations are projected to instil ideas that the techniques are resurrected and given new life. Sikka Magnum, a new work produced especially for Bildmuseet, consists of well over three hundred DVDs. On their reflective surfaces films are projected and then reflected into the room like a mosaic.
Daniel Canogar’s work can be described as a kind of media archaeology and it makes us ponder over our relationship with technological developments and how memory and identity are challenged by constant upgrades. He imagines that the dated media he uses in the exhibition represent some of these memories and identities. The exhibition title, Quadratura, refers to the Renaissance technique of creating three-dimensional effects on flat surfaces. The installations in the exhibition incorporate three-dimensional qualities of the image, in this case of the moving image.
Daniel Canogar / Quadratura is on show at Bildmuseet until 21 april.
