Apply for exchange studies outside Europe!

Now is the time for you who want to do an exchange semester outside Europe during 2025/2026 to start thinking about your application. These are exchange places that all students at Umeå University can apply for. The fact that you gain international experience can be decisive for your future career opportunities.

A pure coincidence that turned out to be one of the best unexpected surprises

Mirjam Karlsson, Juristprogrammet (Swedish Law programme), studied for a semester at the Universidad de Guanajuato in Mexico, something she has not regretted. "The fact that I chose to study in Mexico was a pure coincidence that turned out to be one of the best unexpected surprises of them all. My exchange semester is by far the most enjoyable semester I have had on the programme and one of the most enjoyable times of my life.”

A merit for your future career

Apart from the fact that a semester abroad is often a lot of fun, why should you actually go on an exchange? Several studies have shown that students who have studied abroad are more attractive on the labor market. During an exchange semester, you develop, among other things, your communication skills, which are sought-after qualities by employers.

"Through an exchange, you can both broaden and deepen your education. Traveling and experiencing another culture is both fun, enriching and educational. It is also a merit for a future career," says Ida Bergmark, International Coordinator at the International Office.

Don't hesitate to apply!

Mirjam Karlsson's advice to you who are keen to go on an exchange is "Apply, don't hesitate! The least you can do is to apply and then think about how you want your exchange to be. If it doesn't go as you planned, you can always go back home and back to normal life in Sweden."

Start on time!

The application deadline for university-wide places outside Europe in the academic year 2025/2026 is 15 November.

Remember to start your application in good time. For example, you need to talk to your study advisor about the courses you intend to apply for.
