Apply for an exchange semester with a focus on arctic studies

NEWS Now you can apply for exchange studies through the exchange programme north2north, where special focus is placed on arctic studies. For studies during the academic year 2025/2026 you can go for a semester to Canada, northern USA, Great Britain, Australia, Iceland, Finland and Norway including Svalbard. The application deadline is 15 January.

Through exchange studies, you get to know a new country, its culture and make friends for life. The exchange programme north2north is a network within the University of the Arctic where you can go to a number of universities that are also part of the network. In the academic year 2025/2026, you can apply to studies at universities in typically arctic regions such as northern USA, Canada, Iceland, Finland, Norway including Svalbard, but also to newcomers Australia (Tasmania) and Great Britain (Scottland and England).

Possibility to get a scholarship

"As an exchange student within north2north, you will learn things about yourself, other places and cultures, but also about your own region - the north! Take the chance to improve your knowledge of Arctic issues by taking courses at another university within north2north. There is also a chance for a scholarship," says Helena Löfstrand, International Coordinator at Umeå University.

Madeline discovered Iceland's majestic nature

One of the students who went on exchange studies via north2north is Madeline, who is currently about to finish her exchange semester in Iceland. Madeline is originally from Texas in the USA and is studying the Master's programme in Environmental Science with a focus on sustainable development.

- I have had a wonderful time in Iceland with so many cool experiences in a beautiful country, says Madeline. I had a great group of friends who I went on adventures with almost every weekend. I got to go ice climbing, hike on a glacier, see an eruption and northern lights at the same time, and see seals and whales.

In addition to all the highlights in terms of nature experiences, Madeline also appreciated the courses she studied, especially a 5-day field course to the south to see protected areas in Iceland.

- I would highly recommend this programme to other students. There is so much to discover in the North, especially as a girl from Texas. I love seeing the winter in new places and find there are always new things to discover and do, says Madeline.
