AI Applications in Infection Biology by NDPIA

NEWS Infection biology explores the complex relationship between hosts and pathogens, which often leads to infectious diseases – a leading cause of death globally.

With the emergence of artificial intelligence (AI), powerful tools are now available to analyze and interpret complex biological data, enhancing and accelerating research in this field. Integrating knowledge from multiple disciplines will be necessary to address many questions within infection biology. However, taking the first step to implement these tools in research projects can be daunting.

This course is specifically designed for young researchers in infection biology who have a limited background in computational science and AI methods. Our goal is to create a relaxed atmosphere through lectures and workshops, fostering a network for the next generation of researchers. By providing an understanding of how AI methods can predict disease outbreaks, survey pathogens and antibiotic resistance in the environment, aid the development of new antimicrobials, and promote responsible AI use, we aim to initiate discussions and collaborations across these disciplines.

“The aim of this course is to introduce infection biologists to the often abstract and overwhelming idea of using AI in their research. By offering concrete examples of how to implement these tools, students gain confidence to apply these approaches in their own research projects,” says Professor Debra Milton, NDPIA coordinator.
