"Visiting the University during our days of celebration is like being offered a loaded smorgasbord of fun and knowledge – the only difficulty is to decide what to choose and what to miss out on. Everyone is welcome to the lectures and the ceremony. Everything is free of charge and no prior registration is needed," says Charlotte Wiberg.
Although the main event takes place on Saturday, the celebrations start already on Friday at 11:15 when Chief Librarian Mikael Sjögren inaugurates an exhibition of the 2018 honorary doctors, new professors, award and medal recipients at the University Library. This is followed by a lecture, in Swedish, with the title Socially intelligent systems – when we need to work with AI held by Docent Helena Lindgren. One of the highlights is also the event Umeå universitet möter in which honorary doctor and Swedish Television correspondent Carina Bergfeldt participates in a discussion we get to know her personal story and learn about potential occupational hazards, in Swedish.
13 popular science lectures in English
On Saturday 20 October, a full smorgasbord programme of popular science lectures takes place starting at 9:00 in the Social Sciences Building and the Humanities Building. Out of the 45 lectures, of which 13 are offered in English, you can listen to knowledgeable people discuss ebola in conflict regions, how to understand the malaria parasite, infections as a result of climate change, regeneration of the spinal cord, and microbial biodiversity. Or why not learn more about how cells eat themselves? All lectures are 20 minutes long. The lectures are held by our new honorary doctors, professors and award recipients.
Annual Celebration Ceremony
To celebrate this year's eight new honorary doctors, 27 new professors and the 11 award recipients, the University holds an Annual Celebration Ceremony on Saturday at 17.00–19.00 in Aula Nordica.
"One of our more famous guests of honour this year is Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of the World Health Organization, WHO, and former student at Umeå University. He is now being conferred as honorary doctor of medicine at Umeå University. That will be an interesting encounter," says Charlotte Wiberg. Everyone interested can join in on the Annual Celebration Ceremony in Aula Nordica. No dresscode applies to the audience and no prior registration is needed.
